WESTFIELD CENTER — After 47 years in law enforcement, Westfield Center Village Police Chief Kent Patterson is retiring — again.

He said his last official day will be July 1.

Patterson, 74, has been police chief for 20 years. Previously, he retired as Medina post commander in 1997 after 20 years with the Ohio Highway Patrol.

“It’s time,” he said Tuesday. “I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve had a long career with the highway patrol and the village.”

Patterson said he and his wife, Patty, are going to spend more time with their family. Their oldest son, David, works in law enforcement out of state.

His younger son, Mike, is a sergeant with the Wadsworth Police Department and lives in Montville Township.

Patterson is proud his sons have gone into law enforcement.

“I would honestly tell you, I didn’t push them (in that direction),” he said.

Patterson said he plans on staying in Medina County when he retires. He’s a native of Wooster and his wife is from Orrville.

He said he’d continue running the Law Enforcement Academy at the Medina County Career Center’s adult education program.

“It keeps me young,” Patterson said. “I do enjoy it. It’s very rewarding.”

After students complete the program, they get a certificate and can start interviewing for police jobs.

A committee has been formed, headed by Councilman Rick Robbs, to find the new chief. Patterson is also on the committee.

It hopes to find someone by the spring. Currently, there are two part-time officers on staff.

They will likely add a third this year as well.

The village has a population of 1,150, with 450 households. It is the corporate headquarters of Westfield Insurance, which has 1,500 employees.

Westfield Center’s police budget is $198,000 a year.

The chief plans, directs, manages and oversees all police activities.

The salary range for the job is $62,000 to $72,000 a year.

The village asks that those interested should apply by April 5.

An application can be found at

A resume, cover letter, job application and police officer certification should be sent to Westfield Center Village, P.O. Box 750, Westfield Center, OH 44251.

Packets can also be dropped off at the municipal building, 6701 Greenwich Road.
